Anam Cara
Writer's and Artist's Retreat

Anam Cara Writer's and Artist's Retreat is a tranquil spot set apart to nurture and to provide sanctuary for novice as well as experienced people working in the creative arts. Whether you retreat to work on your own project or as part of a workshop retreat group, you will find support, creature comforts, and peace – all you need to do your best work.

An all-inclusive, year-round residential retreat, Anam Cara offers private as well as common working rooms and five acres of walking paths, quiet nooks and crannies, gardens, a labyrinth meadow, cascades and a river island.

To help fulfil Anam Cara’s purpose and to let the breezes off Coulagh Bay clear your creative path, we recommend a stay of at least a week. Your hostess, Sue Booth-Forbes, an experienced writer and editor creates an ambience and a daily schedule for you to focus your energies on your artistic endeavours.

Anam Cara has been created to support people who want to enhance their creative gifts. In order to do so, we ask that you come with a project in mind, having done the advance planning and preparation necessary to work on it. We provide the ambiance and the structure to help you reach your goals and produce your best work.

If you are interested in discussing your work, we often spend time in the evenings offering each other feedback. We have found that there is much inspiration in the exchanges that take place among the writers- and artists in residence.

If you would like my editorial advice, you and I could meet privately. If you are interested in more formal writing or visual arts workshop retreats, you could participate in one of the those scheduled annually at Anam Cara, the list of which can be found on the Anam Cara website at www.anamcarareteat.com/index.php/workshops).

Diving into the Mystery: Studies in the Creative Process
As a fundraiser for Pieta House (https://www.pieta.ie/), whose mission it is to support those threatened by self-harm or suicide, Anam Cara Publishing has published Diving into the Mystery: Studies in the Creative Process, a book which illustrates how creativity can play an important role in people’s well-being.

For this anthology, 54 former residents and supporters generously contributed their personal essays in which they explore the many aspects and results of their creative processes. Sales of the book have already raised €2000 for Pieta House, and a second printing is on order.

The goal of Evelyn's workshops is to share her painting knowledge and experience with each student in the way that will best help them to further their own personal development. The small group size means lots of personal attention. You will have as much of Evelyn’s time as you wish and require! There are demonstrations at the beginning of each day and one-on-one demonstrations go on throughout the day.

To view Evelyn’s work and read recommendations from students, please visit her website (https://www.evelyndunphy.com/)
Evelyn Dunphy is an artist based in Maine who travels and paints the world. She has been recognized for her activism in land conservation and children's hunger programs. Evelyn has exhibited her paintings in the US, Canada, and the UK, and is also a sought-after art teacher who leads workshops in Europe, Cuba, Ireland and various locations in the United States. Her paintings are available for direct sale on her website. One of her collector's words speak to the importance of her work:
"Evelyn not only beautifully depicts what she sees with light, color, and style, but her paintings elicit the feeling and emotion that she had when she created the painting. Whether it the light shining on one object or a unique scene that captured her eye, her paintings tell a compelling story."

Adam Wyeth, the author of The Hidden World of Poetry: Unravelling Celtic mythology in Contemporary Irish Poetry) will take you on a journey through the great panoply of Celtic myth, revealing how these ancient narratives and traditions are deeply intertwined into the fabric of our daily lives.

Mythology and folklore is humanity attempting to explain the world to itself. By understanding myth, we tap into the deep root of the personal and collective unconscious. As each generation re-visits these tales, our personal and expanding lives offer fresh interpretations to these age-old myths.
