Margaret Dukeman will stage her exhibition 'Voices of the Land' at the Allihies Copper Mine Museum opening on 22nd August. Born in the farmlands of Iowa, USA, Margaret's solo exhibition, “Voices of the Land” features work in the representational and post-impressionistic style. argaret’s passion and appreciation for the land. Her Great Great Great Grandparents John and Margaret Shea were from Allihies. John was a miner in Allihies before emigrating to the United States in the 1840’s. In the U.S., he mined for a short period before purchasing beautiful black farm land in Northern Illinois where he and Margaret settled. As a monument to their Irish determination and grit, the home they built still stands 170 years later. Their sacrifices are not lost on the generations of family that follow.
Beara Race Series
Saturday 21st September
Beara AC are have announced the 2019 Beara race series, which will see a 5-mile race, take place in three locations on the Beara Peninsula. The first race takes place in Allihies on September 21st and will take runners through Allihies village, out towards the historical copper mines and down towards Allihies beach. Race number two is on Bere Island on October 12th and the third and final race is in Eyeries on November 9th. Runners who compete all three races will collect a unique race series medal.
