Michael Dwyer Music Festival
7th - 9th June 2019
Traditional music, dancing, workshops, concerts and sessions in a number of venues throughout Allihies Village. 2019 marks the 21st year of the festival, which commemorates Michael, a renowned Beara tin whistle, fiddle player and composer. His family, the gifted musicians the Dwyers from Ardgroom, are also celebrated at the festival.
Festival highlights include performances by piper Paddy Keenan who has previously been honoured with the TG4 Gradam Ceoil "Musician of the Year Award" and was a founder member of The Bothy Band who in the 1970s changed the face of Irish traditional music forever, merging a driving rhythm section with traditional Irish tunes in a way that had never been heard before. He has been compared to jazz great John Coltrane. Joined by Alan Burke, Paddy and Alan will be performing in concert at the Mine Museum at 8pm on Saturday 8th June, and later at 10.30pm in Jimmy's Bar.
Ohter musicians performing inlcude John Dwyer and Leah Murphy, the Céilí Allstars, comedienne Sr Bernadette, Richie Dwyer, Sean Wholihan, Matt Crannitch, Jackie Daly and Murphy's Me. Workshops inlcude - fiddle led by Eoin Stan O'Sullivan from the Céilí All-stars, tin whistle with Mary Donegan, singing with Cáit Ní Lordáin, and mandolin/banjo with Sean Wholihan
There will also be a Saturday lunchtime session with Reel Women in Lehanmore Communinty Centre, near Allihies at the end of the Beara Peninsula, an outpost on the edge of the Wild Atlantic Way.
Two art exhibitions, by Lynda Loughnane and Bill Griffin will also be held during the festival. For the full line up and times see the link below.
