See & Do
Anam Cara Writer's and Artist's Retreat is a tranquil spot set apart to nurture and to provide sanctuary for novice as well as experienced people working in the creative arts. Whether you retreat to work on your own project or as part of a workshop retreat group, you will find support, creature comforts, and peace – all you need to do your best work.
An all-inclusive, year-round residential retreat, Anam Cara offers private as well as common working rooms and five acres of walking paths, quiet nooks and crannies, gardens, a labyrinth meadow, cascades and a river island.
To help fulfil Anam Cara’s purpose and to let the breezes off Coulagh Bay clear your creative path, we recommend a stay of at least a week. Your hostess, Sue Booth-Forbes, an experienced writer and editor creates an ambience and a daily schedule for you to focus your energies on your artistic endeavours.
Anam Cara has been created to support people who want to enhance their creative gifts. In order to do so, we ask that you come with a project in mind, having done the advance planning and preparation necessary to work on it. We provide the ambiance and the structure to help you reach your goals and produce your best work.
If you are interested in discussing your work, we often spend time in the evenings offering each other feedback. We have found that there is much inspiration in the exchanges that take place among the writers- and artists in residence.
If you would like my editorial advice, you and I could meet privately. If you are interested in more formal writing or visual arts workshop retreats, you could participate in one of the those scheduled annually at Anam Cara, the list of which can be found on the Anam Cara website at www.anamcarareteat.com/index.php/workshops).
Diving into the Mystery: Studies in the Creative Process
As a fundraiser for Pieta House (https://www.pieta.ie/), whose mission it is to support those threatened by self-harm or suicide, Anam Cara Publishing has published Diving into the Mystery: Studies in the Creative Process, a book which illustrates how creativity can play an important role in people’s well-being.
For this anthology, 54 former residents and supporters generously contributed their personal essays in which they explore the many aspects and results of their creative processes. Sales of the book have already raised €2000 for Pieta House, and a second printing is on order.
All proceeds go to Pieta House.
